"According to a newly released survey from AARP, adults aged 45 and older are lonelier than ever. The association surveyed around 3,300 Americans in August and found that 40% of them reported feeling lonely, a five percentage point increase from the last time the survey was conducted in 2018, and the first time the survey was conducted, in 2010."

I don't know who they are referring to, but it's news to me. Most days, I am immersed in a teeming wave of humanity. Any quiet time is a special treat.

You can have your teeming wave of humanity, I'm more of a sociopath. A wonderful wife, five cats, and two dogs fulfill me all the company I need.

Now get off my lawn.

Not me...I live alone with 8 cats and a German Shepherd.

The cats are killing me on liter and my K9 is bipolar.

When I lay down to watch TV and sleep...at least 3 are in arms' length.

Social media and smart phones have replaced actual relationships. It affects almost everyone in some way, unless you are Amish (or a Luddite).

I don't do that stuff.

I was in a doctors waiting room and out of 10 people...me and another guy were read.

I looked at him and he looked at me and we read each others minds.

Five cats?
???????

They're referring to people who never had children.

You don't think of it when you are young, but as you get older, reality starts to set in.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet: The organization polled was AARP, whose membership consists primarily of liberals and Democrats. That would explain why the majority of those polled feel "lonely" or unhappy.

Most conservatives favor AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens a conservative membership organization that serves as an alternative to AARP. Many of them flocked to AMAC after AARP threw their support behind the Affordable Care Act and opposed to privatizing Social Security.

Five cats?

That's nothing! We have six dogs and two cats in the house. I have two dogs, my daughter has three dogs, and she is keeping her boyfriend's dog while he is deployed. We also have an upstairs cat and a downstairs cat and we cannot keep them together because they hate each other.

Our cat sleeps with my wife and I on our bed and, being nocturnal, he gets up and moves around the room at about 3 or so in the morning which wakes up my dog in the other room. He starts barking and whining at the cat, and I have to get up and go sleep on the couch while he lays on the floor next to me. My little dog gets jealous and joins me by sleeping on top of me on the couch. The cat then curls up on my wife and goes back to sleep. There is usually about a 75% chance that I will be wide awake at 4 am every morning!

My little dog has taken to laying in my computer chair next to my left leg. If I get up, I have to set him down, so he can follow me wherever I go.

I am never lonely!

Nope. I have been very lonely before, but not now.

Yep, being alone is a whole different thing from being lonely.

I have a phone but I put it down in a waiting room and just enjoy being present. I learned that from a guru on my phone (Ekhart Tolle) on you tube. He tells people to 'put down the phone.' Yeah I guess that's kinda ironic.

My phone is more of an annoyance than anything else. I keep it shut off most of the time because we live in a dead zone. And the company I work for makes us leave them in the break room.

Sounds like it would be pretty hard to sneak into your house at night!

My phone, for me, is a source of information that I can get just by asking. I repaired my chain saw watching a gal who repairs small engines 'Chickanic' I think is her channel. I love 'Action Lab' a guy that demonstrates scientific principles by doing simple experiments. (probably a lot of those). I like Chat GPT and podcasts as well as having access to all kinds of news and media.

These 'phones' are now part of us just like our cars and other modern technology. They are not going away. It all started with the 'Boob Tube.' Learn to use the technology and be mindful or it will take over your life.

Look, I have my studies.
I have my hobbies
I have access to good reading.

Why in the hell would I need people?

I've never been so alive as when I'm so alone.

er.. Wait. That didn't come out right.
