WASHINGTON — The country’s largest union representing federal workers is calling for lawmakers to pass a short-term spending measure to end the government shutdown immediately, urging Democrats to abandon their current position and join Republicans in supporting a stopgap solution.

“Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,” American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley wrote in a statement first shared with NBC News. “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”

The statement could increase pressure on Democrats to budge from their current stance. Senate Democrats have insisted that they won’t vote to reopen the government without a commitment from Republicans and President Donald Trump on extending health care subsidies through the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of the year.

Good....Not that there should be such a thing as a Federal employee union to start with.

I think more pressure needs to be applied.....Maybe leak that fed employees that are currently working without pay will be the only ones getting paid after the shutdown. ;)

why?...

I don't care for public unions.....Then again this is not a discussion about the +/- points of unions, start your own thread on that.
so you bring up something and no one can comment on it?....gotcha....

Union people are just like Blacks to Democrats. They don't like either of them other than to use them for their votes. This union request might be the thing that makes idealess Democrats finally reopen our government.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union of federal employees in the nation that represents over 800,000 workers, demanded that Democrats swallow the Republicans’ clean CR to reopen the government.

Everett Kelley, president of the massive union, said in an open letter on Monday that the best path forward was to, "Reopen the government immediately under a clean continuing resolution that allows continued debate on larger issues," and ensure that every federal employee that has been working or furloughed under the shutdown receive back pay.

"Because when the folks who serve this country are standing in line for food banks after missing a second paycheck because of this shutdown, they aren’t looking for partisan spin," Kelley said. "They’re looking for the wages they earned. The fact that they’re being cheated out of it is a national disgrace."

After Democrats voted to de-fund the SNAP and WIC programs, the well is finally about to run dry.

Federal workers will need some help with food for their children, and the lines at the food banks may well reach lengths not seen since the days of the Soviet Union.

Schumer is really more afraid of AOC than of the parents of starving children?

Schumer doesn’t care

I truly dont believe either side cares one iota. When the air traffic controllers start controlling this while saga, things will get settled. If they walk away, its chaos.

The shutdown is going to have diminishing returns. The Dems have made their point about as well as they're ever gonna make it.

Democrats will cave but their base will be glad they stood up to Trump in a losing cause. That’ll show Republicans.

My answer is that someone should have civil service protections, or a union, but not both.

The problem with civil service unions is the workers form a solid block of voters, especially at the municipal level, and this makes the politicians who should be representing the taxpayers in negotiations skew towards appeasing said voting bloc instead.

i can only speak for the place i worked the PO...the only ones who protected us from the people in middle management and the useless decisions they made was the Union.....OSHA....was pretty useless until they got pressured by the union or a congress person questioning their response to a safety concern....when i started in the PO it was like 90/10 democrats to republican....when i retired it was like 60/40.....trump may have ruined that by some of the shit he was saying about the PO during the elections...

They are tired of being used as political pawns
