A King County judge granted pre-trial release to a man accused of killing one person and shooting six others in the Jan. 2020 mass shooting in downtown Seattle. Tolliver will have to wear an ankle monitor as he goes to live with his grandmother before the trial next month. He did not have to post bail. Instead, he just had to promise to return to court.

A Chicago police officer was killed Wednesday in a close-range exchange of gunfire with a man while investigating a domestic altercation in Gage Park, officials said. The 18-year-old man who allegedly shot the officer received a gunshot wound to his head and remains hospitalized in critical condition. CWB Chicago has learned that the 18-year-old was arrested last summer after police said he and two other people ran from a car that had just been used in a shooting. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office rejected felony charges against him...

It used to be called good sense. There was a time, the courts kept violent offenders in jail..Now they're out and many times we see they wreak more death and destruction. Perhaps judges should be held accountable for their decisions that cause irreparable harm to other families.For better or for worse, one of the consequences of our legal system’s presumption of innocence for defendants charged with crimes is that bail allows them to be out of jail pending trial (coupled with a measure of security that they will return to court as needed).
In a case charging some misdemeanor, especially a non violent crime, bail makes sense. But when it comes to violent crimes (as charged), bail obviously poses a serious risk that the alleged criminal will be out — and free to do his or her crimes some “more” despite evidence of the risk he poses.
Our legal system doesn’t believe (supposedly) in “preventive detention.” But maybe it’s time to contemplate that concept.

Judges don’t make the laws. The current mess in NY State cannot validly be laid at the feet of the judges when the legislature passed the bail “reform” laws and the Governor signed that shit.It used to be called good sense.
