Yes political acceleration jolts people out of their sleep. So when the Left gets as insane as they want as fast as they want, normal people wake up to the insanity and fight back. The danger of Republicans is that when they get into power they slow things down so that normal people have time to get acclimated to the insanity. They never put the car into reverse, however.
It would be nice if they'd accelerate in the opposite direction, but they hardly ever do. They did with abortion, but instead of accelerating to sanity they veered of into a new direction of insanity.
Democrats have a good shot at winning back the House. House Republicans are in a little civil war of their own. The Establishment has larger numbers but the slim majority means the the Populists/Libertarians have been able to throw a monkey wrench into their plans. This creates a bad look. On the flip side Republicans are going to take the Senate and the White House. However, I don't see much change coming of it since the Establishment still controls the majority of Republicans in the Senate. Trump is going to continue appointing Establishment Republicans to the courts like he did three times to SCOTUS. He's a notoriously bad judge of character so even if he has a mind to drain the swamp (and I'm not convinced that he has) he'll appoint swamp rats to other positions just like he did the last time he was President.
