Justin Trudeau and Donald Trump had some bad moments and some oddly friendly ones — but here’s what will really matter if Trump is re-elected

It is always wise to have a good relationship with U.S leadership. Many in Canada don't understand Trump or the plight of the U.S economy and struggle with trying to maintain global leadership position. Some are too ignorant to understand what is at stake and why it is critical to support either candidate whomever wins. We should be MORE like the U.S in terms of civil liberties and accountable government, not less.

Maybe they should hire proper foreign relation representatives who can not only lobby on behalf of Canadian interests but who also understand American interests as well. Let people who understand the U.S citizens and their history not some bloody Political Science graduate. NAFTA/USMCA will protect us and Canadian experts know it but they strike fear into people.

If my health holds up, I'm for hire. If Canadians can't negotiate successfully with either administrations (and we did a poor jon dealing with Bidens decisions), than we deserve our plight. It's a layup if these "experts" really appreciate the U.S concerns.

OTTAWA — Word came unexpectedly in January 2017 that President Donald Trump wanted to talk to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Officials scrambled to connect the two leaders and racked their brains: what urgent matter had they not foreseen?

Trudeau had already had a friendly congratulatory call with the newly inaugurated Republican president. Trump, who campaigned on ripping up the North American free trade deal and forcing Canada and all NATO allies to spend more on defence, riffed on Trudeau’s famous father, the former prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

Canada should be worried.

Trump is talking about tearing up the USMCA treaty he just negotiated because it didn't do any of the things he promised.

He won't tear it up. Canada just has to tell them "we agree with you that we have to apply strategic tariffs on those who abuse trade policies".

Hell, even I would feel comfortable making the trade argument to his team and I'm just your regular, run-of-the-mill Village Idiot. I'd ask to meet him directly if his team disagreed.

He negotiates hard but if you talk to him in Plainspeak and make the argument from the position of someone who has tried to grind out a living, he understands you. He doesn't understand or respect bourgeoisie tactics even as he is wealthy.

Trudeau was wise to NOT criticize Trump and also to give him a call after the attempted assassination. Trudeau has gone through some personal adversity the last couple of years with his divorce so Trump and him will probably have a far warmer relationship the second time around. In fact, I would guarantee it.

You're really trying to say that Canada is in trouble if we don't cooperate with the US.

I'm saying that America and Canada need to maintain their relationship and trading bloc. Are you one of those fools who thought we could sell our goods into China and abandon our relationship with America? There were so many of them just a decade ago and I warned as many who would listen that this was going to hurt us significantly as China would never consumer our goods as Americans would.

Now look at how we play catch up and try to smile in the face of Americans even as our Security Industrial Complex spread hatred for America.

Now you're saying that America is Canada's future enemy. You don't have to convince me that there's peril in what we have already done by turning to China on trade and other cooperation.

I agree inasmuch as parliament is divided. Which of our political parties represents capitulation and which represents resistance to US hegemony and aggression?

I think you've raised an issue worth my time.

I'll just suggest for an opener that America doesn't hold the power alone anymore to negatively influence the rest of the world's countries.

You don't understnd trump or the plightof the American economy.

Our economy at this time is the best on earth. It beats everything Trump ever did. The problem has been high prices and that is a due to capitalism and the greed it creates. The result of that greed is price gouging. After the pandemic when demand was high and product was low, capitalists raised their prices. Once demand and products evened out, capitalists refused to lower their prices. That is the motherfucking problem and Trump won't do a damn thing about it because his rich friends and his company are participants in the gouging.

You talk about American civil liberties. You have clearly bought into the illusion. And if we were about accountable government, Trump would have been disqualified from running. You certainly are not the one Canada needs to represent them in talks with our leadership.

Your economy over the last four years has been based on debt, stagnant wages, part-time jobs and jobs to illegal aliens.

Just the facts Jack.

Trump will screw up that relationship because unless Trudeau is willing to drop to his knees and do to him what Trump did to that microphone, he'll consider the guy an enemy.

Why do you clowns keep pretending that Trump is anywhere near 'normal"?

My opinion is that the U.S has to decrease spending significantly and apply tariffs to rogue states for at least a few years until you get back into a safer fiscal situation. Once your in a healthier spot, than you have some flexibility. A war could break out tomorrow, Western civilization has to be prepared for potential expenses that would be required. That is my opinion. Trump won't go too hard on Canada, we have a trade agreement.

A Trade agreement that he is already complaining about because Mexico is still trading with us, and Chinese goods are avoiding tariffs by stopping in Mexico first.

Tariffs don't work. The fact Trump thinks they do shows why he's unfit for office.

Well, the trade agreement may have to be amended to provide a list of nation-state that won't be exempt from tariffs that the trade agreement protect, IF the ownership of that company is from that nation and/or that nation has a heavy degree of investment in the company.

Trump was away of 3rd nation steel and/or aluminum that was being shipped over from Canada into the U.S but it was Made In China while our companies just made a profit by buying Made In China and shipping it over to you. W

Imagine what dangers lie if you are buying low grade products believing it is actually Canadian-Made?

I don't worry about that.

Chinese products are very well made. China is dancing around the US because while we've been focused on greed, they've been focused on process improvement.

Very well made?

That is far too general a statement. I wouldn't want to built tanks with materials purchased from China.
