I'm not too keen on insurance companies. They represent the worst of what a business can become. However, here is the thing about health insurance that cannot be said about single payer.
You can leave a health insurance company and they cannot force you to stay with them, nor can they force you into a medical choice you do not agree with.
When the government pays, you dance to their puppetmaster. It has always been the case all through life.
Take for instance the single payer system in the UK. They are now forcing parents to keep their child in the country and follow their healthcare rules, under some nonsensical guise that THEY know what's best for the child. An action that would be intolerable to the left if it was an insurance company, is actually defended by many who fear to have to care for themselves.
The following article is just a small taste of what is to come if the US is actually stupid enough to go with single payer.
