âDemocratic Sen. Jon Ossoff stood before more than 300 potential voters Saturday to deliver what he called âa report from our nationâs capitalâ a half-year into President Donald Trumpâs second term.
How voters react in Georgia, which has taken center stage in the Trump era as a key battleground state, could help determine how the final two years of Trumpâs presidency go â and how (or whether) Ossoffâs young political career continues.
âIt turns out that when Donald Trump said he was going to fight for working-class Americans, what he really meant was he was going to take away your health care to cut taxes for the rich,â the first-term senator told voters wielding American flags and Ossoff for Senate memorabilia at a rally in Savannah, Georgia.
The message from Ossoff, delivered at the second major event of his 2026 re-election campaign, was clear. He cast Trumpâs signing of a massive Republican spending bill to fund much of his agenda, dubbed the âBig Beautiful Bill,â as deeply revealing of his priorities â which the Democrat said arenât about making life easier for the working-class Americans that helped power his presidential campaign.â

Senator Ossof is correct, of course; Trump has no interest in helping working-class Americans â in fact, the reprehensible legislation Trump signed into law harms working Americans, taking away access to affordable healthcare to the benefit of the rich.
As a political aside, it would be interesting if Ossof, likely to lose reelection, liberated from playing-it-safe politics, won reelection because he told the truth about Trump and Republicans, their contempt for working Americans, their pandering to the rich.

Jon Ossoff, Democrats' most vulnerable senator, sharpens Trump criticism in a state Trump won
Georgia Democrats thought they'd solved Trump â and then he won again. That's shaping Jon Ossoff's re-election run now.
