Mahler sees, he is the bigger man: where he and Kibbel disagree, Mahler knowing he is right and being the adult in the room, still concedes his view to Kibbel and acknowledges his right to disagree, valuing their friendship.

But not Kibbel. Ever the dour, petulant Leftist, he cannot tolerate disagreement, feels Mahler has no right to his own (correct) view) and will never forgive Mahler for being the smarter, more adult man in the room. Friendship over.
