I try lots of "home remedies" in order to keep from using pesticides and bug killers.
Over the years, nothing really has worked, even that heavy duty bug spray.
Sure, it kills whats there, but doesn't keep them away.

So far, in all my years of trying home remedies for keeping bugs away............
the only 2 things I've found that work for me are mothballs and Lavendar Oil.

I have an old Windex bottle I use for my lavendar spray.
You HAVE to get the REAL, PURE lavendar oil, otherwise it doesn't work with that fake chemical made stuff.

I put 1 ounce of lavendar oil in the spray bottle and fill it up 3/4 with water, and shake it good.
Then I spray around the outside of my doorways and windows.
I do that once a week in Spring and Summer/Fall, and so far it works for me.

I also get those little blue bags of mini mothballs at the dollar store.
I use my hole punch to punch a few holes in the top of the bag and then I hang and place them around
my covered patio.

Where I live, theres a LOT of gnats and wasps, and they LOVE my patio for some reason.
But since I started using these mothball bags a couple years ago, I don't have any problems with them.
And no, I don't smell them either. But their fumes keep the bugs away!!!!

Just a thought, in case you are looking for something to keep the bugs away.
You might try these and see if they work for you.

A HELL of a lot cheaper than one can of bug spray.

.

And much healthier!

I've got several bottles of very high quality lavender oil.

Will also try the moth balls. The only bug I don't want to repel is fireflies, but they mostly stay off my elevated deck.

In my kitchen, the blue-light bug traps work very well on fruitflies.

I've also tried those lighted bug zappers..........and the bugs think its a spa and resort.
But they don't zap them, only give them a nice tan.

I've tried those plastic water bottles you fill with water, vinegar, and sugar to attract gnats and flies......but the bugs only look a that and laugh.

What?

Citronella oil on the brim of you hat for gnats.

Citronella oil is a natural bug repellent for gnats, bees, wasps, roaches, ants, moths, flies, ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes1. You can use citronella oil on the brim of your hat to repel gnats1.

They make a Citronella lamp oil that you can put in a Dietz lantern that works well on the patio.

I have a dedicated Dietz lantern just for it....It's also cheaper per hour as far as use goes too than the candles and such.....It also produces the same amount of light as regular lamp oil.

Just don't try to use it for lighting inside.
