For those that thought the days of epic feats of engineering were over:

The Italian government has granted final approval for the long-awaited €13.5 billion ($15.6 billion) bridge that will connect Sicily to the mainland. Despite decades of delays due to environmental, financial, and other concerns, the project was officially greenlit on Wednesday, August 6 2025. Plans for the bridge have been in discussion since the late 1960s.

According to the Messina Strait Company, Wednesday’s approval will enable the launch of preliminary activities such as archaeological and geological surveys. It will also authorize land expropriations. However, the Court of Auditors must first validate the committee’s decision. The process indicated this could take a few weeks, while Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini suggested that construction could begin between September and October.

What would it cost The Boring Company to tunnel under?

Good question. There's an underwater bridge between Denmark and Sweden and, of course, The Chunnel between the UK and France.

Maybe after they are done with that they can replace Baltimore’s Key Bridge.

Hell, they haven't even finished demolishing the old one yet.
