Not just money, although that is certainly true. Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac ( Kissinger), and it is built into our political process. Anything can be hidden or downplayed if you're approved, and nothing will be held back if it suits the agenda. Just remember if you will when Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden, 2 of the biggest horn dogs in Congress, were bullying Clarence Thomas on his morals for confirmation. Hypocrisy, conflicts of interest, and outright lying is what we vote for. I doesn't matter one little bit about your ethics, it is about theirs.
