I have very recently come into possession of a couple of handguns that are not mine. In order to keep them secured from public access, I obtained permission to secure them, and store them until the owner returned. It was a medical emergency, and the owner literally left them on a table out on the range.
This emergency also uncovered 22 neglected and abused dogs. Working with the sheriff and two local rescues, we have, at least temporarily, save 21 dogs. One puppy was killed and eaten during a food fight when I first fed them.
Anyway, this guy is sketchy, I barely know him. But he presents himself as a gangster from Sacramento. There is reason to believe the guy may be involved in some evil dogfight operation.
Anyway , I have these guns, a S&W .40, and a Taurus 9mm. I see it as them coming from a questionable source. Anyone know how to look them up online?
Do I need to take trip into town to a dealer?

probably your local PD could trace them
Two things. I asked a officer in st Johns, flagged him down in is patrol vehicle, he said unless it was suspected in some crime, he couldn't.
The other thing, the sheriff person that came out may say the same. But he went to a training seminar this weekend. Except for 911, sheriff dept is closed on weekends.
Tomorrow I may be able to get in touch with the sheriff, but I'm just anxious, and wNt it now damnit!

The only database on stolen guns is the ATF's and it's LEO access only.

I cannot even discover if some guns that were stolen from me were ever entered in.

That seems to be what I am finding out too. There are a few websites to claim they check serial numbers, but there are other links in the searches warning against using those sites.

Do not enter anything into some website. They do not have the data, it's a scam to collect personal information from you.

Fact is, no one in the government or typical LEO's gives a crap about stolen guns until after they are used in a crime.

No, there is no way to find out unless you live is a State that requires State firearms registry. Even then it may be that only law enforcement has access to those records. I don't know how those States work. As for the Federal level it is against the law to keep a Federal Universal gun registry.
Unless your State requires you to register all your guns or just handguns I wouldn't worry about it.

No. The police have access to a database for guns reported stolen. However they do not allow civilian access. Gatekeeping and all that...

Follow up...these guns are clean.
I think it's a good thing that the Sheriff's department knows where they are.
Good replies, thanks all!
