In practice, a lot of polygamists are older men trading off their underage daughters to each other.

In practice, one breadwinner means most of the family on government aid.

In practice, one man with 4 wives means 3 teenaged boys have to be forcibly ejected from the community and dumped on the roadside.

This stuff matters. Marriage laws are about practicality as well as morality. Gay marriage didn't have any practical downsides, while polygamy does.
