When Saturn V took off for the moon only 0.5% of the total mass of the ship ever returned to Earth. The other 99.5% of the ship fell into the ocean, burned up in the atmosphere, was left behind in space or on The Moon.

While that was considered, at the time, the most expedient way to get men to The Moon before The Russians, it certainly wasn't the most efficient.

When "Destination Moon" was made in 1950, based on the 1947 book 'Rocket Ship Galileo' by Robert Heinlein, the idea was to not throw away more than 99% of the rocket ship.

Current plans for a moon mission using SLS and Orion service and command module (which are still not tested) will be just as wasteful as the original Apollo mission.

Earth orbit seems to be the most efficient launching point.
