YIKES! Another chance for a German leader to unite Europe into the end time beast that will bring Armageddon! Arrrgh!

What difference does it make, who the president of Germany is, when it’s an occupied country? There are 32 U.S. military bases on its territory.
By the way, did you know that according to the 1990 2+4 Agreement (West Germany-East Germany + the four Allied powers), the Soviet Army was supposed to withdraw from German territory by 1994, and U.S. troops were to follow suit once that happened.
So, does the U.S. honor international agreements?

Just to clarify a few things about Germany:

Germany is not an occupied country. The presence of US forces in Germany is based on agreements between allies, not on occupation law. Germany is a sovereign state and can decide to be part of NATO.

The Two Plus Four Treaty required Soviet forces to leave eastern Germany by 1994, and it placed restrictions on foreign troops and nuclear weapons in the territory of the former East Germany. But it did not require all US forces to leave Germany.

Also, the German President is not comparable to the US President. He or she is not elected directly by the people and does not run the government. The German President is elected by the Federal Convention and is mostly a constitutional and representative figure. Real executive power lies with the Chancellor and the government.

As a German, I don’t see American troops here as occupiers. I see them as allies. My father, my brother and I served in NATO structures, and I grew up knowing American, British, Danish and Norwegian soldiers. For me, that was not occupation. That was partnership after a very dark chapter in German history.

Of course one can discuss US bases politically. But calling Germany “occupied” is simply not accurate.

And who would you vote for?
If I had to name someone hypothetically, maybe Gregor Gysi or Wolfgang Kubicki.

Not because I agree with either of them on everything — I don’t. But both are experienced, intelligent, articulate, and capable of speaking beyond their own political camp.

Gysi has a lot of wisdom, humor, and historical perspective. Kubicki represents a strong liberal instinct for freedom and skepticism toward political overreach.

For this office, I would prefer an older, wise person who can bring people together and remind them of democratic values, rather than someone who fights daily party battles.

I agree!

And could you also name a female candidate?
