Just looking at the broad issue of Russian Collusion and trying to decide where to start investigating it was not rocket science...if the investigator did not have a biased agenda going in. What the Russians were doing in 2016 needed to be investigated, but one of the 'elephants in the room' - something that obviously needed to be investigated - was WHEN Russian Interference began. That was already well-known. It began in 2014 under President Obama.
Instead of Investigating when Russian Interference began, during Obama' s administration, which would have been logical, Mueller completely ignored it and went back a decade or so to investigate Manafort. He went after Manafort for another obvious reason - Mueller went after almost every Trump associate because he wanted to find anything he could use to squeeze them and force them into testifying against Trump.
Mueller HAD to ignore the origins of Russian Interference in 2014 because if he had opened up that can of worms he would have either had to investigate himself and his own Russian connections or recuse himself from the entire case. He couldn't do that - he was the 'Insurance Policy'. Russian crimes were identified as far back as 2009, ad did Mueller's connections with Russians. In 2009 Mueller reached out to a Russian Oligarch for funding to conduct a rescue attempt of a retired FBI agent that had been captured. In 2010 records / evidence shows then FBI Director Mueller hid evidence of Russian crimes. If Mueller had started digging into Russian Interference in 2014 he would have caused trouble for the Obama administration (who admitted they did not do enough to stop the Russians) and for himself. He would have proved he should NEVER have been appointed Special Counsel due to the Conflict of Interest that existed.
Even going back decades to dig up dirt on Manafort was 'dangerous' - for Hillary Clinton, her campaign manger John Podesta, and his diry brother 'Fat' Tony Podesta. John use to be Manafort's partner in the business for which Mueller targeted Manafort. What Manafort was involved in, John Podesta was also. 'Fat' Tony was also working for the Russians as an UN-registered foreign agent. Mueller got around dragging the Podestas (and John's link to Hillary) into his targeting of Mueller by giving both John and 'Fat' Tony IMMUNITY...for doing nothing at all. No testimony, no evidence....nothing.
Ignoring the origin of the Russian Interference and giving the Podestas immunity to prevent them from being dragged into his targeted investigation are examples of how Mueller went out of his way to focus only on Trump and his team while avoiding the Obama administration / the origin of Russian Interference and while ensuring no connection to Hillary was made part of his investigation.

Fired former FBI agent Pages testified under oath that the FBI conducted its own (illegal) Investigation of his Trump and his team about this very same false claim and did not come up with evidence of a crime being committed, none committed by Trump or anyone associated with him...BEFORE the official investigation began and Mueller took over as Special Counsel.
Mueller, again, never found evidence of Trump / Trump Team illegal collusion. How can I say that? ZERO INDICTMENTS / CONVICTIONS FOR RUSSIAN COLLUSION!
