I've always held out a little hope that Trump realized -- somewhere, somehow -- that people were only nice to him because of what they could get from him. He may not realize they think he's a buffoon, but at least he might realize that he's a mark.

Surely he could see through the smiles of Putin, European leaders, congressional Republicans.

But now I don't think he has any idea what people think of him. At least at a conscious level. He wants desperately to believe those smiles. That's how profoundly needy he is.
