People should counter-protest the Westboro idiots peacefully, and we have seen that. Counter-protesters out shout them, and hold up blinds to block the funeral attendees from seeing them. But if they are public land and follow the local permitting laws they cannot be stopped without violating the 1st amendment.

For many years the Patriot Guard, with whom I am a member, has provided cover or an escort for funerals threatened by the Westboro church. Always at the invitation of the bereaved and knowledge of local law enforcement. They are a tiny church, mostly a family and we seldom hear much from them any longer. Now we mostly escort funerals, departures, and arrivals of troops from deployment.

Never, not even close. Police would see that we were ways away from the service. The Wadesboro people on the other side (behind us here). Sometimes they would start to holler and scream nasty things. We'd just start our bikes and let them idle.
