I work out every day in a Plebian gym. I do not go to the politically correct gym west of the city that is housed by the “woke” corporate Family YMCA. The gym I go to has a corporate aspect, but I find it is less crowded with the pretentious, postmodern crowd that frequents the Y. I recall back in the1980’s when health clubs first appeared in the city, memberships were expensive, and equipment was limited. You might see three or four treadmills and you had to wait to use them.
The nautilus machines in these early gyms made the rounds and they rotated and appeared in new gyms that popped up. That was long ago and while many of my fellow citizens were drinking in the beer joints and eating bad food I was watching my weight and though I went into those bars forty years ago I never smoked or drank excessively. I was a fly on the wall in those places and I learned a lot about a city where happy hour is a way of life. This is born out in the obituaries.
The gym I go to today would have exceeded my wildest dreams forty years ago. When I first joined over a decade ago I was taken aback by treadmills almost as far as the eye could see. In addition, there are droves of non-weight bearing impact-less machines that can deliver cardio benefits for the heart and lungs. I’m seeing a very good mixed crowd there. Older citizens like me are well represented but there are many young members and that heartens me.
I am an old Boomer, and I take it one day at a time. I know no one leaves this Earth alive and I am good with that. However, an individual can take proactive measures to manage their health personally. I like that Plebian gym. In a city where alcohol, tobacco, and now marijuana are pedaled to the citizens by local businesses, it is an oasis for those with common sense. I hope that the gym can stay and succeed here by making a profit. I think it will. At least I hope so.
