No idea where this originated, but it's not only funny, but it contains some interesting concepts. And yeah mods, you probably won't think it REALLY belongs in the immigration forum. :)

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The recent actions of the Tea Party are prompting an exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and to agree with Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. "I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry..

“He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left before I even got a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?"

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. He then installed loudspeakers that blared Rush Limbaugh across the fields. "Not real effective," he said. "The liberals still got through and Rush annoyed the cows so much that they wouldn't give any milk."

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons and drive them across the border where they are simply left to fend for themselves. “A lot of these people are not prepared for our rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said. "I found one carload without a single bottle of imported drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley Cabernet, though."

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about plans being made to build re-education camps where liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR races.

In recent days, liberals have turned to ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have been disguised as senior citizens taking a bus trip to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans in powdered wig disguises, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior citizens about Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney to prove that they were alive in the '50s. "If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we become very suspicious about their age." an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and are renting all the Michael Moore movies.

"I really feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them." An Ottawa resident said. "How many art-history majors does one country need?"

It comes from the New York Times, opinion, in 2006....only every where you have put in Tea Party, it states PRESIDENT BUSH.

To Care who edited my post and provided a link to the 'original', please note that Kristof wasn't taking credit for it either and admitted that he didn't know where it originated. I'm sure there are various versions circulating out there with various edits to suit somebody's intent. You also screwed up my post by screwing up the quote function. :) THWAP

Just teasing friend, but yes, you deleted the /quote at the end so the quote box went away. And I don't think it IS copyrighted material since the author you linked stated he got it somewhere else, didn't know its origin, and didn't identify a source for it.

Most likely it is just a clever e-mail somebody composed and started circulating years ago and has gone through various morphfications (is that a word?) since then. I have seen several versions, but this one was especially clever so I thought I would share it.

Not arguing with you. Just clarifying where I was coming from. As a former editor I'm very conscious of copyright laws and I honestly don't think they apply in this case. :)

I think you are correct about copyright.... since it is of 'unknown origin'. However, I agree with Care that, for the sake of the board, we do need to be cautious about copyright. It's not worth taking a risk. And, as a writer, I'd be seriously pissed - in fact I have been seriously pissed (including seeking legal redress) - if people publish my work without paying me to do so. :eusa_angel:

Oh I'm not quibbling with Care's concern. Nor her adding the link.

But you can't copyright somebody else's words that you admit you didn't write, get permission to use, or pay to use. Years later, since I last published a tabloid newspaper, I still get requests from folks to use this or that in my publication, usually something I wrote. But if what I wrote contained a 'one time permission to use' content, I would refer them to that person for permission as it was not mine to give. But jokes, anecdotes, etc. that were not attrituable to anybody are generally accepted as being in the public domain and we do not have to provide a source. Especially something that has been rewritten and revised as much as the OP has over the years.

But in the 'better safe than sorry' category I agree with the policy of providing a link or source when such is advisable. In this case though, if the writer of the NY Times piece did claim that as copyrighted material, which he almost certainly didn't via his disclaimer, he would be pissed at me rewriting it too, yes? And I'm pretty sure the NY Times editor wouldn't have allowed copied content if they thought copyright laws applied either. :)
