The Nazis not had been socialists. When Hitler overtook the political party DAP (=German Workers Party) it had been a dead party. He renanimated them with the expression National(=right)-Socialistic(=left) DAP. The idea behind the new name "NSdAP" was just simple to get votes as well from the right spectrum and from the left spectrum. And another propagandistic trick had been to use the German pre name "Nazi" for this political conglomerate. Nazi was a short form of "Ignatius" - a prename which was often used from traditional Christians and represented tradition, reliability and "Bodenständigkeit" (=down-to-Earth-quality). No need to say that the leading Nazis had been anything else than Christians.
