If one compares Trump's campaign promises with public opinion concerning to what extent they reflect his actual performance, he is a heavy pantload for Republican candidates to have to run with.
The latest figures from Real Clear Politics:
Trump, economy - Approve: 40.8% // Disapprove: 54.7%
Trump, inflation - Approve: 35.9% // Disapprove: 60.7%

"As concerns around the state of the economy and inflation continue,
about eight-in-ten registered voters (81%) say the economy will be very important to their vote in the 2024 presidential election."
Pew Research Center, September 9, 2024

TRUMP CAMPAIGN PROMISES:

“Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods.”

“Prices will come down. You just watch: They’ll come down, and they’ll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything.”

“Starting the day I take the oath of office, I will rapidly drive prices down and we will make America affordable again. We’re going to make it affordable again.”
“We're going to get the prices down. We have to get them down. It's too much. Groceries, cars, everything. We're going to get the prices down!

If they do something constructive about the health insurance debacle this year, nobody will care next year. If they don't reverse those massive premium hikes before they go into effect, the GOP will be toast next November.

Remember when eggs were the big bad barometer on inflation? They were selling for 8-9 bucks a dozen, I just paid 1.49 a dozen. A lot of other commodities have gone down in price as well. Not bad for just 9 months.

The impact should be a disaster for Republicans.

Unfortunately, there’s no telling given the stupidity of the voters.

There is an inexplicable, irrational cult, first captivated by his "Access Hollywood" depravity, aroused by his goon attack on outnumbered police at the Capitol, and titillated by his hateful lies, such as Black immigrants eating pet cats and dogs.

It's an acquired distaste.

I find groceries very affordable.

It is a little late for the insurance premium thing, open enrollment for the ACA has started. Premium notices are going out. It won't be as big a deal as some have made it out to be. But it will be painful for many families, ironically, those approaching retirement age with upper middle class incomes will be hurt the most. Most will just step down the level of coverage, and yes, many will fly solo.

Are the EBT cards going to get funded? I mean the optics here are terrible, even a delay. Do some people abuse those benefits? Sure. Do some people have poor spending habits? Of course. I don't know, maybe take them back to the way they were, stamps. At least, back then, the customer had to separate out the food stamps items and the non-food stamp items. The beer, the cigarettes, the dog food. Of course, there was no tax on the food stamp items.

It is the independent grocer, various direct delivery companies like, yes, chips and soda. Even small convenience stores. The longer it is delayed, well the deeper that impact is going to be. And then tax time is going to roll in and Trump will be victim of a classic mistake, over promising and under delivering once again. Rolling into the summer of next year will not be pretty.

The healthcare thing is an advanced tax credit. Even if they do something about it any any point after the notices go out, it can still be adjusted and worse case scenario is people will just get the extra back when they file taxes. Ideally though it should be addressed this year. I think a lot of companies just auto enroll people to stay in the same plan automatically and it is up to them to find a new plan so I doubt a lot of people have begun switching plans yet.

As for food stamps, IDK given the court ruling they had to pay if they have paid yet as I don't get SNAP. Either way, swing voters swing on whatever their big concerns are going into the voting booth, not crap that happened a year ago or else they wouldn't be swing voters.
