Now, what if they don’t resign but they are hated or viewed as disreputable? Papal schism. Two or more popes at the same time. They just elect another pope and disrespect / ignore the current one. Which might make the current pope and their supporters upset, obviously.

Really not sure what the logistics would be in the modern era because this has not happened since medieval times I believe. When this has happened the illegitimate pope was called the antipope. Although while a schism is happening which one is the anti-pope is very much in dispute.

The reason this hasn't happened since medieval times is that in the MIddle Ages, anti-popes often had a King backing them.
