How To Handle A Coworker Who's Trying to Sabotage You

I handled it perfectly. The guy was making shit up about me to the big boss from Germany. I found out from another manager who was in the meetings. He would come to me and ask "did you say that?" and I'd say of course not.

My brother said don't get into it with him. Don't apologize and don't explain. Just keep doing your job. They'll see he's full of shit.

Well one day I decided I won't let this guy make shit up about me and get away with it so I confronted him and let him know I knew what he was doing. Then I told him you are DESTROYING this business and I'm going to tell the big boss if it doesn't stop.

Well I know it's not going to stop so I said **** it. I'm going to tell on him. So the owners are here this week. One comes into my office and I ask him "how long should it take to respond to a request for quote or when someone sends you a PO?" The owner said IMMEDIATELY. I said, "well let's say you are busy" He said 24 hours AT THE MOST. I said I agree. And that's not happening around here. Sometimes customers have to ask 2 or 3 times for a quote. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 weeks for them to get a quote. I said "I don't want to throw anyone under the bus so just make an announcement to everyone that it should be 24 hours. Because no one listens to me around here"

He said "who is it?" I said "I don't want to throw anyone under the bus" he said NO, I need to speak to them and correct this! I said "It's Dave and Buster".

I hope they are mad that I told on them. If they ******* say anything I'm going to say I know about all the lies you've been telling about me to the owner in those meetings and all I did was tell the truth, so **** off *****"

BTW, their names aren't Dave and Buster. The names have been changed because their names are very unique and someone here might know them.

Because a competant big boss would cross check:

Quote request dates/time vs. Quote Deliver dates times. Who was turning around quote and PO's in a timely manner and who was slacking.

And check with customers as to quote request turn around time. Which employees did customers feel were responsive turning around quote and PO's in a timely manner and who was slacking.

This is easily a data driven event. Remember IT can pull the emails and phone records.

You were right to finally do something because most of the time, things do not come to a stop all on their own. In other words, actions do need to be taken at some point.

They don't like ANY of us sales people. They think I'm a hybrid of sales and operations but I am not. I'm 100% sales and what they are doing is DESTROYING the business.

Then they don't like the owners either because I wasn't telling them anything the owner wouldn't tell them.

I don't give a **** about bad employees. I don't care if they like me. I care that I am successful and so is the company.

They say "we don't like your tone when you tell us we fucked up". Well I'm sorry snowflake but saying it nice doesn't seem to be getting through your thick skull. They don't like a guy who's not their boss telling them what to do.

I've worked at this place 10 years. My former partner used to tell me this was happening to him all the time and I didn't care because it wasn't affecting me. And we got along great. It was only till I started working with them and pointing out their unacceptable work behavior.

And this manager has been spreading the word about me. One of his co workers in Operations sent me the dumbest email. It said "You care too much about commissions". So I let the owners know they said that. What do you think the owner said? OF COURSE you only care about $. So do we.

So I only care that the owners love me. Piss off.

I tried. Really I did. But then the Operation Manager kept coming to me after his meetings with Buster and the big boss from Germany and asking me "did you say this?" "Did you say that?" and I said NO WAY! He's making shit up about me. That was the final straw. I tried so hard not to tell because I don't want the conflict. If you piss these guys off, they could make your life harder or maybe even run you out of the company. But if he's in meetings I'm not in and my name is coming out of his mouth, **** HIM Harry.

My brother told me if he says anything to me to say "Buster, the truth hurts. Doesn't it? It hurts even more than lies because I can prove the truth". You can't prove your lies.

I have emails showing customers asking me mid June for a quote. Then I have emails from that customer asking early July "where's my quote?" I have proof so I don't have to lie.

We do business with GE. BIG customer of ours. I have emails from them that the subject line is 3RD ATTEMPT!

It was great asking the owner "how long should it take to respond to a request?" and for his answer to be IMMEDIATELY or within 24 hours.

I can prove Buster is taking forever to respond to quotes. In fact he just forgets and lets them get buried in his inbox.

This is why these co workers hate me. GE for example will ask us for a quote. Some of the products they quote and some of the products I quote. I send a quote immediately for my stuff, they send a PO, I place the order immediately and send them tracking in the next day or two. Dave and Buster haven't even sent their quote yet and I'm already done. Often times the customer has to ask again, and again.

And yes I have all these emails.

And by the way. Buster has told me in the past "it's not personal". What a crock of shit. It is soooo personal with him. With me it's 100% just business. I told him "Buster, you are DESTROYING this business" What you are doing is unacceptable.

I don't think a co worker should tell me anything they wouldn't have the balls to say in front of the owner. Do you? Buster does this all the time. 2 weeks ago he said "I'm not using this new software it sucks". Do you think he said that to the owners this week? **** no.
 
I am so glad I get to work solo a lot in construction.
I have no patience for coworkers.
For 7 years I worked all by myself. I only quoted 3 things my partner quoted all the other things. Aftermarket. He had to deal with these guys and he ended up getting fired. Not because he sucked but because we weren't making enough money. We weren't making enough money because of Dave and Buster.

Real quick. Another way Buster is destroying the business. He's responsible for hiring service techs who go on the road Monday through Friday. I hooked him up with the local community college that teaches what we do. They said they'd LOVE to work with us and tell the students about this opportunity. I told Buster and he said "I don't want to hire kids right out of college." So we have 5 service engineers now when we need 20. And the idiots he hires, most of them don't work out. So I forwarded the woman's email to the owners and asked them "don't you think this would be a good place to find service engineers?" They said OF COURSE! They forwarded it to Buster and told him to reach out to the school. He's not going to do it. I told the owners "they don't listen to me maybe they'll listen to you".

Ultimately Buster is a great employee just in the wrong position. He is great at fixing machines but not driving sales. We are SLOW and he's saying he's too busy. What happens when business picks up?

And I haven't even had to show proof. The owner assumed I was telling the truth. If Buster lied to him and said I was lying, I would have tons of evidence to show I'm not lying.

And I would just ask Buster "didn't you tell me you are sitting on 10 RFQ's?" Show the owner those RFQ's and when you received them.

Now I just have to be careful because they are going to try to pay me back. But I don't care anymore. They've pissed me off enough I'm going to start updating my resume and looking for another job.

I'm also thinking about demanding a raise or I'll leave. And I need to be made a manager. I've been there for 10 years and I have yahoos trying to tell me how to do my job. This is another story. Yesterday a new manager who doesn't manage me suggested I should only be giving 5% discount. We would lose all our aftermarket business if I did that. What I sell is just a commodity. You can find 20% discounts with my competitors.

I turned this $50,000 a month aftermarket into $200-$500,000 a month. $500K was before Covid. And I know exactly how much to discount things. How dare some guy who's not even a ******* salesperson to tell me how I should do my job. I told him "do it". Show me!

Yea, I can't believe this guy fucked with me yesterday just after I fixed Buster.

I'm the only salesperson in the office. Everyone else is Operations, Software engineers, accounting people. And ALL OF THEM think they know better than me. And it's not me. It's my boss before me, the boss before him and the guy who hired me. We all agreed 20% is the right discount to give. Now I have bean counters and IT guys suggesting I should lower the discount to 5% so we can make 15% more. It makes sense to them but they don't realize no one will buy from me at that price.

Typically I agree with that but this is not the case. The owner agrees with me. The former president agreed with me. It's accounting and service guys who think they know best.

This business is falling apart because of them. I'm the only one who consistently makes this company money.

And again, I didn't have these problems until I started working closely with Buster. My boss had the same problems before he was let go. NOW they are starting to see that the inmates are running the asylum and they are not doing a good job.

Like I said before, I haven't told them anything the owner wouldn't tell them. If I'm the problem they're the reason.

good one. Heck there is a truck driver here that has the name airplanemechanic and he posted a video and threatened to "blow a persons head off" with a gun. Glad you did the sensible thing.

They were mad at me for a couple days then they started talking to me again. And one day I was saying something outside and one of them said "that's because you're an asshole" and we all started laughing.

I'm not an asshole. If a customer asks for a quote or send a PO, you MUST respond to them in 24 hours. If you don't and it's consistently with every customer, they end up not doing business with us eventually. He didn't realize he is costing this company money by doing what he was doing. Or he doesn't care. Now I know he does care about the owners and the company so I don't think he was doing it on purpose.

Oh, here's an update. These guys were constantly complaining that they have TOO MUCH WORK TO DO and ESPECIALLY SHIPPING. So, we hired a new girl to help them make quotes, flip orders and SHIP THINGS. But they are now having a hard time letting go. We see them back there shipping shit and we ask why Shally isn't back there with them learning how to ship? The truth is, they have plenty of time. They just, for whatever reason, don't want to have to respond immediately to emails that come in. They aren't business guys they are operations guys. They don't understand business 101. You don't make customers wait more than 24 hours for a response. Hell, my customers get a reply in 10 minutes or less.
