I noticed a blue russian cat wandering by my place.....so I have been feeding him. Do not think he is a true feral cat as he is too friendly....alllowed me to pet him which i do not do anymore as all sorts of fleas jumped off onto me. I might adopt him if I could get rid of the fleas....anyone know the best way to get rid of fleas on a feral cat....i mean something tht will not harm him.

I might add if you get fleas on you from a cat or whatever......use calpsacin cream.....when those fleas jumped on my ankles....i never saw them just started itching like crazy....ran inside got some soap and water....washed down my ankles with that ...but the stinging did not go away....used some alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda.....kept on itching....driving me nuts. Since i use capsaicin cream for back pain...grabbed a tube of that and put it on my ankles.....the itching went away fast.

A feral cat will never let you put or spray anything on him. As soon as you try it he is gone. I have noticed that if I have a dog, the fleas are bad. You walk out the door and step on the ground and they jump all over you. But, if I don't have a dog, and just cats, which is what I have now, the cats have some fleas but there is no invasion in the yard with fleas.

The cats scratch now and then but I think they can take care of the fleas on them. A cat's tonuge is rough and i think they are able to flea themselves.

Since winter is not far off, what I have done, and I live in the country not the city, is to make sure all leaves are racked up and all ground around the house is clear, underneath porches especially. So that when a good freeze comes along, it kills all those flea eggs hiding underneath those leaves and animal hair. Seems to work for me.

I bought some ultraguard flea and tick spray....then I had second thoughts about using it....not wanting to harm the cat. I researched it and got contradicting opinions. I think I will use it and hope for the best.

It makes me insane that the pHARMaceutical industry makes so many remedies that kill so many people and animals.

My brother-in-law used a flea remedy for a cat and it killed the cat. I used two topical flea meds for my old terrier, and both immediately made me think he was going to die. Bathed him right away and he recovered.

I use drops because then you can do it and be done. Usually works if you are rubbing them while they are eating. The noise from the spray can trigger their flight reflex.

Persuader, an herb called pennyroyal is a good flea repellant and a product called diatomaceous earth, if you can rub it into the cat's coat, will kill existing fleas. Be careful that you don't breathe in any of the DE while you're rubbing it in.

Good luck.

I use Nextstar. You can get it from Amazon. If he has fleas, he likely has parasites. Nextar eliminates a lot of parasites. And yes, he's Abandoned by someone, not feral. I hope you give him a home

My daughter has pet rabbits with the same problem. Most flea medicines are not recommended if not dangerous for bunnies.

Here's what we do - get a spray bottle and mix 4 parts water with 1 part apple cider vinegar. Spray the cat's fur and work it in liberally. Avoid the eyes - it won't harm the cat but it will sting. The fleas don't like the smell and will "flee" the cat (pun intended!)

OTOH, her bunnies like the taste and smell and will actively lick and groom each other afterwards.

You'll need to do it every week or so as eggs hatch and new fleas show up. Using a nit brush will also help.

Shown to be very effective…
