Always watching: How ICE’s plan to monitor social media 24/7 threatens privacy and civic participation

When most people think about immigration enforcement, they picture border crossings and airport checkpoints. But the new front line may be your social media feed.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has published a request for information for private-sector contractors to launch a round-the-clock social media monitoring program. The request states that private contractors will be paid to comb through “Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, VK, Flickr, Myspace, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Reddit, WhatsApp, YouTube, etc.,” turning public posts into enforcement leads that feed directly into ICE’s databases.

The request for information reads like something out of a cyber thriller: dozens of analysts working in shifts, strict deadlines measured in minutes, a tiered system of prioritizing high-risk individuals, and the latest software keeping constant watch.

I dont agree with this as I didnt agree with it when the Ds were collaborating with social media.
Hopefully they tell them to **** off.
ICE would be finding criminals, and the enablers of criminals. It’s to the benefit of American citizens.

And the democrats thought it was for our benefit by restricting a flatform to speak.
While i am extremely against illegal immigration, im not going to gladly give away what little privacy we have left, for civil issues.

Although, I guess truth be told, they can watch us whenever they want. Private accounts or not. Paying them would probably just be easier.

No kidding, so if ICE reads your comments on a PUBLIC social platform, that's invading your privacy? You fricken loons.

It’s different. The Dems were cancelling people’s right to free speech.

Nobody’s speech would be cancelled here. It’s monitoring organizations that help illegal aliens violate our laws.

It’s exactly what Trump voters voted for.

And the fascist right will of course defend this authoritarianism as ‘justified’ with the lie that only those undocumented will be surveilled – but we know citizens’ privacy rights will be violated, particularly Americans of color.

Who needs rights? Most of us don't use them anyway.
Nobody’s rights are being violated. They are still free to speak. And the benefit is we can catch more illegals and the criminals who are helping them.

Of course, of course.

Have you given ANY thought to how this will work when Dems get back in power??
Monitoring a public message board isn’t going to hurt anyone other than the foreign criminals and their enablers.

If they’re able to catch organizations protecting foreigners here illegally, and thereby harming American citizens, I’m OK with it.
More government, bigger government at the expense of individual liberty – it’s what conservatives advocate for; in this case to intimidate lawful resident immigrants and spread fear through immigrant communities.

I’m for government when they are protecting America and Americans against foreign scofflaws who harm our people.

It's definitely what liberals want. But it's sad to see Rs doing the same goddamned thing.

Maybe someday they'll be a resurgence of limited-government, individual rights conservatism. But right now, it's deader than dead.

Of course not. If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear!

(said every totalitarian who ever lived)
The only people who have anything to fear are those who are acting in opposition to our nation’s interests by protecting illegals.

I’m not schizophrenic at all…iCE is welcome to look up my asshole with a telescope if that means fewer brown parasites.
