Gov. Reagan had to deal with rioting at UC-Berkeley. He didn’t tell police to stand down, like officials have for recent protests of conservative speakers.

Ronald Reagan put the bastards in their place!
Different time and era. America was still in Vietnam, this was 1969, any one associated with the word "communist" was basically persona non grata in most nations in the West, certainly in the U.S (in Canada, you are "cancelled" on the whim of a police agency and their relations). Even the hippies, many who meant well and were good people, regardless of my differences with their ideology.
Today we have politicians happily comparing themselves to socialists, or, if they don't, their policies certainly reflect and even mirror what communist states engage in. The #1 import of goods into the U.S arrives via an authoritarian communist state. All of these facts would shock Reagan if he were alive. If he and his predecessors would have saw what was going to happen, they would have probably had embraced more strongly crack downs. Today, it's far more acceptable.
Realistically, it's a fine line to walk.
Neither Trump or any politician can do today what could be attempted in 1969. The manner in which to win today is in the hearts and minds of citizens. This is why so many on the alt-left avoid debate, while people like myself have sent emails to various forces in Canada to offer to do a polygraph test and debate them. I've challenged many people to debates, even told them they can choose one of their heroes to represent their position. People who don't believe their own ideology, or, who profit from it, avoid public debate.
If the West doesn't win via ideology, it won't win. Hence, my #1 reason for supporting Trump and his stance against the Communist government of China. Too many naively believe just any old politician is going to stand up to China. They're drunk. Many of them probably profiting from the slave labour at the expense of their own nation, and they don't care. We need U.S.A to win.
