In the meantime, this political stalemate isn't doing expectant mothers any favors. "When women don't have access to paid leave, the birth of a child can be a moment of financial crisis for a family," says Martin.

Williams puts it more bluntly: "The United States is still trying to pretend that real workers don't have babies," she says. "Other countries offer paid maternity leave because they're facing reality — we have our head in the sand."

Why punish a company for a woman getting pregnant? The woman and her spouse bear direct responsibility for her "disability", not the company.

We ended up with these unfair laws because we had unfair laws to begin with. At one time, pregnancy was a disability. Women who applied for jobs were questioned on their future parenting plans. Being of child bearing age eliminated women from employment. Employers stopped just short of asking women to voluntarily not have children during their employment. Because pregnancy was a disability, men got jobs where women were eliminated because they were not disabled.

Then came the feminists. Pregnancy was not a disability. Pregnant women were perfectly healthy and capable. They needed only some sick time off, just like a man who broke his leg skiing. There was equality.

Now we have come full circle. Pregnancy is again a disability. Equality is achieved by making not only the woman disabled, but her male partner as well.

They dont, they get pregnant and request time off. When the time is denied she can either heal quicker (pray a lot) or be terminated.

The company makes the decision for her they just put a few hurdles in the way and everyone knows pregnant women and hurdles go together like fries and ketchup

"I can not afford a baby right now" is a major factor in getting an abortion

Good companies will support paid maternity leave. Bad ones won't. What a company should do is simply say "you are not allowed to have a child" because that simply gets in the way of your production. Put that clause right in the contract. Like a woman being off for a few weeks is going to hurt a company. If it does, the company is inherently really bad.
