Once the dust has settled and people realize the lunacy that Trump exhibits. Reality sets in
A day after President Donald Trump said the United States
would be "running" Venezuela following the removal of Nicolás Maduro, Secretary of State Marco Rubio sought to soften the administration's position, insisting Washington does not intend to govern the country on a day-to-day basis.
Speaking to
CBS News on Sunday, Rubio said the US role would focus on enforcing an existing "oil quarantine" and using it as leverage to push for changes in Venezuela, particularly in the oil sector and in efforts to curb drug trafficking.
"And so that's the sort of control the president is pointing to when he says that," Rubio said. "We continue with that quarantine, and we expect to see that there will be changes, not just in the way the oil industry is run for the benefit of the people, but also so that they stop the drug trafficking."
Rubio's comments, delivered across a series of television interviews, appeared aimed at easing concerns that the United States was embarking on a prolonged foreign intervention or a nation-building effort.
