CDZ Homelessness in the United States

There is one thing about all of this that no one recognizes. Many homeless are mentally ill. The bad part is that this country has closed the vast majority of facilities that could treat them.
This country has a great big hangup about mental illness.
People with mental illness are no different than a person with any other type of physical illness.
This country needs to get the fuck over its hangup with the mentally ill.
Instead, these sick, homeless people often treat their illness with street drugs, and alcohol. This exacerbates symptoms, and they end up in jails that lack the infrastructure to house, or treat them.
This cycle continues for years. Nobody gives a shit...nobody cares.
It's fuckin disgusting to be honest.
MICA;

Mentally Ill, Chemically Altered/Addicted

Most of the homeless that people actually see fit into this category. I believe there are actually a lot more homeless people out there that folks never realize are homeless; vandwellers, and couchsurfers and such who either work a regular job or have some type of small pension from somewhere. But they keep it together enough to pass; they have gym memberships for shower and toilet facilities, and they keep stuff in small storage units, where they can often get mail service as well.

Per druggies and crap you are referencing that is not what I am talking about and think you damn well know that.

So are you in favor of enforcing vagrancy and public nuisance laws or not?
I am in favor of people having as much freedom as possible as long as they are not injuring others or other peoples property. With vagrancy laws you could arrest people who are not a threat to society, Social Security recipients who worked their whole life only to learn they cannot afford to maintain a home, families traveling from one destination to another with limited means, people looking for work that may not fit your ideology, etc.

Many retirees are living in small vans or rv's and they stayed in parks so they could survive on their meager pensions. Where are they now as they could not afford homes or apartments either.
Right now, as I write this, I am in a small apt. I could not afford to live here if it were just me and MrG. Our SS just isn't enough for rent plus utilities plus food, etc. The ONLY reason we are here is because the lady that we were renting from in Paradise said she woudl help, because if not for us, she would have burned up. And she would have. 86 people died in Paradise. She would have been number 87. Of course we took her with us. Never crossed our minds not to. And it galls me to accept her generosity, but we will be getting low income housing soon..I hope. Its been a 5 year wait. Finally getting a bit of action on that now. And when we die.....Anne gets all we own. I have collected since the fire, and some good stuff, too. Its all Anne's. Both cars, furniture, the scarves I collected that she loves, any money we may have left in the bank, jewelry, food....ALL of it. Its hers. Its the only way we can repay her.
There was an older lady that since I can recall as a child that lived with my grandparents. She was like family and until I was an adult I never knew she wasn't family but a lady my grandparents took in when she needed a place.
Your grandparents sound like they were very kind people. We obviously need more people like them in these somewhat horrific times.
I think there are a lot of kind people out there still. Yet a lot of not so kind ones too.
It's hard; every time I have done a kindness for some streetmutt, they have made me regret it.
I have gotten to where I only have time for my tribe (and that is actually a lot of people), and to hell with everyone else. I know it's harsh but there is only so much of me to go around and my people should get first dibs on my time, money, efforts, and concern.

I can't look out for me and mine, if I'm used up looking out for strangers.

We saw a lot of different types of people when we contracted the maintenance on the rest areas. Some just needed a helping hand to get to their final destination and others were just total wrecks. I'd say it was about 50/50 on the ones we interacted with in one way or another. The ones near Boise I do have to say were the worst and that is just from the demographics.

The first one I ever helped was a mentally retarded man. He had worked for one restaurant for 20 + years in Oregon. That was sold when the owner passed away and the new owners fired him. When I found him at the rest area for two days in a row I inquired to find out what his story was. He was a very polite sweet man with no car, no money and no hope at that point. I gave him a car and a job. I figured with a car and some money in his pocket he could hopefully get to somewhere where someone would give him a job until he could get his retirement.

I helped others over the years in a similar way and it didn't always work out but I would still try if it were in my ability to do so because for some it does make a difference.

Good on you.
I have a large family and some that are as close as family, what I simply refer to as "the tribe". If I want to do something for someone, there is more than enough need among my own people to keep me occupied full-time.
I deliberately bought a larger property than I needed when I moved to the country because I want to have the space to accommodate any of the tribe that need a place in the future due to age, infirmity, or financial hardship.

If we all looked out for our own, there wouldn't be such a problem, would there?

If we all looked out for our own, there wouldn't be such a problem, would there?
There is some truth to that but it doesn't always work out that away.
True but that is still something we should strive for.

Remember "The Waltons";? They had 4 generations under the same roof, everybody contributed, and they always tried to avoid debt.
That type of living and thinking needs to make a comeback, IMO.

A person who is disabled or on limited Social Security only gets about $800.00 a month to live off of. My friend's rent is $500.00 a month
I don't like what those landlords offer for what they charge for it. Garbage, heat, electric, water, sewer, gas, libraries, schools, fire, police, medical, and general obligation property taxes are all through the roof at city hall, billed on an involuntary basis and liened against private property to finance an enormously powerful and totalitarian local government. Homeownership vs. renting is always the "Big Question" but ultimately it all comes out of the same budget, depending on how frequently residents move and how well equipped they are to take care of minor home repairs and building maintenance issues themselves. That City Hall bullshit might be "all in" on the rent, but you still have to pay for it, and they don't let you fight it if you have kids in the district.

There are still a lot of families taking care of one another. Not sure about having all under one roof though.

The debt bombs have created a lot of problems.

Adopt me.

That's hard-line communism. High society is full of shit if kids aren't allowed to get out on their own at the age of 18—21 or so.
and they always tried to avoid debt.

No. Just no. Communism is not the way to avoid debt, and it does not need to make a comeback.

I disagree.

That's family, not communism.

Do you need a haircut and a lobotomy? No. That's crime family communism, like the Kennedys who cut out part of JFK's sister Rosemary's brain to make her more docile.

It's good for children to visit their grandparents, but then they need to go home with their own parents and finish their homework for school. Family reunions are good to have, too, once in a while, but not four generations under the same roof all day, every day.

There's a godfather, and there are mob bosses in that sort of family.

And?

What's your point?

That was a yes or no question, which you refused to answer. Why am I not surprised?
Because your kind of a prick?

Note to Conservatives: When talking to Libtards, all you have to do is ask them to explain themselves. Once they paint themselves into an intellectual corner, their heads explode.
:WooHooSmileyWave-vi:
What is your definition of Conservative?

Note; Just stating a fact of my opinion of you per your posts must really trip your trigger.

What you need is Socialism. A welfare state from cradle to grave and a National Health Service.
Medical treatment for all, free at the point of need and paid for by the tax payer as we are all taxpayers. Like here in Britain.
