Turns out we have large gamma ray bursts right in our atmosphere. They are created by lightning and are quite intense;

 
Why do you think neutron stars crash into each other in our atmosphere? ... lightning is a full spectrum emitter ... and that does include UV ... we can tell because they're ... you know ... white ... that's all the colors, with UV and IR ...

Way way way back in the 20th Century ... we had these primitive devices called "radios" ... and lightning would briefly interrupt reception ... the discharge includes radio waves too ...
