The UK has been going downhill since WWI when the flower of two generations was wiped out on French battlefields. WWII completed the process by using up what little remained of British wealth. After WWII the British liberals (read democrats) moved to confiscatory taxation on the wealthy and job providers and most moved out of the country handing estates that had been in their families for generations over to the government because they couldn't afford to pay the taxes on them. The UK may not have a democratic party, but liberals are liberals the world round.

Poverty isnt what makes a 'shithole' country anyways. I think it refers more to a certain type of corruption from the bottom up... from the police to the top of the government institutions.
