In college, one time, a couple of very cute female fresh persons decided to hitchhike home from the very local downtown. I’m pretty sure both of the ladies were drunk.
I know for a fact I was.

In my drunken state, I assumed I should go with those ladies to “keep them safe.” (I was very drunk and this made sense to me at that time.)

First thing I noticed was the rifle on a gun rack on the cab portion of his work truck.

My alcohol dulled senses allowed the thought of “oh oh” to reach my consciousness.

It turned out well. The local townie was a pretty nice guy and gave none of us any reason to be alarmed.

But, I never hitch hiked again.

Yes I hitchhiked on the freeways of houston to get home from university of houston on friday after classes.

In the Army, I once hitchhiked with a friend from RAF Lakenheath to Norwich for a day trip.

He assured me that he had hitchhiked before the same route and easily got rides. but that must have been because he was by himself. People were more reluctant to pick up two young males.

We got lucky after about half an hour on the trip there. But on the trip back, it took us more than three hours before someone finally picked us up.

My friend was gay and from tuscaloosa, alabama, this was the eighties when people still had regional accents. He kept saying in his gay southern accent "last time I wasn't out of one car good before I was in another."
