He went through a horrible period of addiction and depression. I know he wrote a book about it but don't know the title. Kind of weird that a comedian of his talent should suffer depression.

He was/is an all around talent - very rare in show business these days. Far beyond comedy, he was an outstanding Terpsichorean, a vocalist, a musician, and a great actor.
