The Koreans who defended Little Korea against marauding mobs in L.A. after the first Rodney King verdict triggered the 1992 riot (that drove LAPD out of the area) will argue the point with you. Because while most of the stores, vehicles, and pedestrians in that area were being looted, burned, damaged, and beaten, the armed Koreans stood their ground and the rioters gave them a wide berth.

It is a mistake to think the singular purpose of the armed citizen is to defend against government oppression. We live in a violent culture which is home to a lot of very dangerous people whom government is incapable of ensuring protection against. The above is one example. So the simple fact is being unarmed in America is equal to being a de-clawed cat.

Bottom line: It is better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it. The downside of that fact is it's the price we pay for being citizens of a Nation which was born in a cloud of gunsmoke.
