Stealing Home: Or, Why Babe Ruth is a Better Thief Than ...

Babe Ruth stole home plate 10 times in his MLB career. This is a notable feat, especially considering his reputation as a power hitter rather than a speedster. While Rickey Henderson holds the all-time record for stolen bases, Ruth's 10 steals of home are more than Henderson, Lou Brock, and Tim Rainescombined.

Babe Ruth was great all-around player, but the greatest base stealer was Rickey Henderson.

Of course it's Henderson, really the undisputed greatest leadoff hitter in history but man I loved watching Vince Colemans numbers rise daily for a large stretch of his early career.

When Ruth stoIe home it was the second half of a doubIe-steaI, with a teammate stealing second, Ruth on third, and Ruth scoring when the throw goes to nab the runner at second. It is an excellent and exciting pIay, but not reaIIy indicative of a great base steaIer. It is a wonder that Ty Cobb didn't have more of these than Ruth.
