Not a good article. A piss poor article in fact. Of course it is true that Trump’s populism was embraced by conscious and barely conscious white supremacists. But identifying white supremacy with Trumpism — treating one as essentially equivalent to the other and ignoring the much broader grievances and historical roots MAGA tapped into — this is all wrong.
That such a pathetic human being as Trump was elected in 2016 and almost re-elected in 2020, even after the country elected Obama, shows that one cannot simply see everything solely in terms of racism. To do so, or to ignore other failures of our increasingly inegalitarian and dysfunctional economic and political system, will only guarantee further Trump-like victories. Excesses and obsessions of “liberal culture” must also be addressed.
We live in a world of giant corporations and global economics, of global competition, but our overall culture and political system is utterly unprepared to face up to this changing reality. Rationally and creatively addressing world problems, and recognizing clearly the role U.S. economic imperialism plays in perpetuating many of them, is also absolutely necessary.
