Probably because "gay" used to mean "happy". But homosexuals, who suffer from depression and suicide at huge rates, have co opted it as a euphemism for "homosexual".

I believe the word was first used in such a way by the noted homophile Gertrude (((Stein))) Later on Albert (((Ellis))) helped popularize it.
