An agreement to build a gas pipeline from Iranian gas fields through Iraq and Syria to the Mediterranean was signed in 2011 between Iran, Iraq and Syria. At the same time Syria refused to agree to a gas pipeline from a Gulf state, I think Qatar, for the same purpose.
This, an Italian political magazine/media outlet, claimed back in 2012 was the reason the U.S., on behalf of the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia began funding the insurgency in Syria. An Italian friend sent me this link.

If so, it was a real bad move.
