Frank Sinatra

With the recent passing of master arranger/producer Quincy Jones, I think it appropriate to post this collaboration between the Chairman of the Board and the Count Basie Orchestra doing this Jones rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon". That folks is lead tenor Frank Wess on the flute.

I didn't start appreciating Sinatra until I started taking dance lessons. He has a large body of Fox Trot music, most of which is musically excellent.

But here's the thing...he was such a powerful figure in the music industry that he was able to pick and choose the best new songs that he wanted to record, and obviously he got top rated production. His vocal range was quite limited, but he never had any problem singing those songs.

I still haven't figured out Elvis Presley's popularity. Or the Beatles, for that matter.

Frank was also appreciative of new talent. He once called Lou Rawls "The best Baritone in the industry".
