Coppola directed these two films back to back.... in fact, he was writing the screen play for Rumble fish at the same time as The Outsiders was being filmed. Which could explain why Outsiders was so sloppily done.
Outsiders is a terrific story done not so terrific. You never really get into the movie, the scenes are too random, the acting ranges from outstanding in some parts while atrocious in other parts. Lacks depth, haphazard story line. It is VERY difficult to believe that the same guy that did Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation - did this movie.
At the time critics overwhelmingly hated it. And it lost $millions at the box office.

Then there is Rumble Fish. Artistic for sure, and unique. But so much better done than The Outsiders. It's like he just wanted to get the first film done so he could work on Rumble Fish. Deep character development, raw emotions and filmed brilliantly. One of his best films, certainly in the top 5.

All in all - both movies lost incredible amounts of money. They bombed. I have always thought Rumble Fish bombed because The Outsiders was released first and, as reported, movie goers were still bruised for having seen The Outsiders.

Thousands every year go to the house where "The Outsiders" was filmed. Been there myself.

That is kind of odd. The house was only used for a few scenes. Literally only a few minutes of the entire movie. And nothing important happens in it.

If you say so. The park is just up the street and the lot where the fight took place is one block up.

Johnny's house is on the left just before the lot where the fight takes place.

What does "if you say so" mean?
It isn't an opinion, only two scenes occurred in the house, and both are short and not a key part of the story.
The empty lot I would get, the church would make sense - but obviously it was just a set.
The park makes sense - all were scenes that were a part of the movie.
But the house was just a couple minor scenes. That isn't an opinion. It is just a fact.

Also bad for The Outsiders of course was it was released at the same time as Bad Boys.

Pony Boy writing in his room. The shower scene made Rob Lowe. Two bit eating the pie with the beer. The dust up between Pony Boy and Darrel.

Besides, Tom Waits is in it which is why I went and saw it in the first place. (though yeah, very briefly)

Waits was in Rumble Fish also, and more prominently.
The house scene is towards the end of the movie, what I would grant you is it is the main scene of the bit players like Cruise and Lowe.

They have a ton of memorabilia in the house. Most prominent is Diane Lanes dress. Lol

She sure was hot back in the day, still looks good. Probably shouldn't have done facial work, gives her that plastic look in non photoshopped images.
To my knowledge she has never admitted it, says her look is all "makeup, lighting and angles" as she has aged.
But I don't believe it, she has that tell tale "sheeny forehead" and super smooth only in spots.

Quite a cast of unknowns at the time

Every person in Hollywood has a beginning. :) :) :)

God bless you and the remaining cast members always!!!

P.S. To me, the movie is good, but it's also sad which is why I have not watched it in years.

The movies intended to enlighten us about juvenile delinquent misbehavior seem as tame as the Frankie and Annette surfer movies of the same era. Just movie fluff.

Both the movies and the books are my youngest daughter's favorites.

The author was just 15 years old when she wrote The Outsiders.

All of the actors in the movie went on to become big stars.

These books and movies are for teens by a teen, and should be reviewed with that in mind.

Diane Lane was at the peak of her powers in Streets Of Fire. She's still around, and still looking good.

I made the mistake of telling my wife Diane Lane was the spitting image of one of my ex-girlfriends in Streets of Fire, except my ex had bigger boobs.

Now I'm not allowed to watch that movie.

While my wife is around.

I never knew that the writer was so young when the story was written by her. I wonder what made her write such a sad piece.

God bless you and Mrs. H. always!!!
