I'm not sure how long it has been illegal there, five or six years back they trafficked some girls to Dearborn to have it done.

When they tried to prosecute them under federal law, some bone headed Jurist decided this is strictly a state issue, so a federal prosecution was unconstitutional. Outraged, the citizens of Michigan passed a law.

Many states have done so since.

Liberals used to speak out against this and were vehemently against FGM/C so.much so back on September 30, 1996, Congress passed and President Clinton signed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, which included a provision making it a federal crime to perform female genital mutilation on anyone under the age of 18.

Now the big issue for liberals is supporting genitalia mutilation for people that identify as the opposite sex.
