F-35 Lightning II, disaster for the USAF?

Lockheed Martin´s ambitious F-35 Lighting II is supposed to replace various types of aircrafts of the United States Airforce for decades. Now, it´s a disaster what LM presents. Low operating range, low lifespan, low performance and low dependability/safety at very high costs. What is the US doing about it?
