As I see it, the EU was more than happy to defend China as long as it wasn't their industries and employees being flooded with stuff. After Trump applied heavy tariffs, China flooded their markets quickly. In addition to them stealing critical European vehicle IP and decimating their domestic markets in Germany specifically.
As always, they are now trying to pretend they cared all along as they want to avoid Americas wrath on the trade abuses they have applied to U.S companies for decades. "Hey dont focus on us man, you were right, China is the problem!"
I have little respect for courage after the fact. They should addressed it many G7s ago but they refused to.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen found some mutual understanding with President Donald Trump during the G7 conference, declaring "Donald is right" about China's certain trade policies.
"When we focus our attention on tariffs between partners, it diverts our energy from the real challenge — one that threatens us all," von der Leyen said during a meeting at the G7, which included Trump's attendance before his abrupt departure back to Washington, D.C., on Monday, Politico reported.
"On this point, Donald is right — there is a serious problem," she added, referring to China ignoring global trade rules.
