A few days ago upper house elections were held in Japan resulting in significant gains by PM Abe's ruling coalition and advancing the likelihood that a long-sought constitutional amendment may be closer to becoming reality. This victory will likely enable Abe to become the longest-ever serving PM and affording him significant political capital. A number of female candidates were successful in the elections, and two physically handicapped individuals won seats for the first time.

The only news occupying more media coverage lately has been the tragic and criminal arson at the Kyoto animation studio that left the nation quite shaken.
