He is a brand that he and the network created.
He was just a guy who won a cooking show, his flamboyance and personality attracted Food Network attention - as well as audiences liked him.
He completely transformed himself, and everything he does and says to is promote his branded personality. His actual cooking show is nothing out of the ordinary. He is an average cook with fancy bowling shirts. He is not a chef. He has zero training in cooking. He graduated with a degree in hospitality.
Can't blame the guy - he became a millionaire on the gullibility of people.
Exactly like Rachel Ray.

People like this ruined a once terrific channel.

I'm not bothered by him, as much the fact it feels like he's on about every second show the network airs. Too much Guy all the time.

He’s good at leveraging his look/brand into revenue, but I’m sure all of those restaurants are managed by nameless drones and the restaurants themselves just coast on tourists throwing their money away

How do you think he got started? Maybe you should learn more about a person before you start talking them down. Have you read anything about his charity work?

He appeared on a TV Game show, and won.
Food Network liked his charisma, and so did the audience of the show.
He was heavily promoted, and became a star.
There is nothing wrong with that. Not saying there is.
But I won't pretend he has the cooking muscle of Emeril, Brown or even the grossly over commercialized and completely fake character Gordon Ramsey
