I think the actual objection was to having dogs living with the humans in the house. Keeping a dog outside, which used to be fairly common except in the most extreme conditions, is fine.

While this is not a common feeling, I know many people who agree, and they are not Muslims or extremists. In fact, I'm not pleased by someone's dog sniffing at my crotch when I visit their home.
