It's difficult to express now, but she was the ultimate "hottie" in her 20's and 30's. She was deemed by consensus to be the sexiest woman alive (in Western culture). She made Marilyn Monroe look like a Girl Scout.

I didn't get it at the time. To me she was not very attractive. And the sexy image continued for decades, long after she had lost her youthful glow. She was like a mediocre singer who was wildly popular when young, and people continue to love them over the following decades.
