I think awareness of what is going on with the A.i overview onslaught on free speech should be increased.

AI, including features like Google's AI Overview, can facilitate censorship by selectively omitting or manipulating information based on programmed algorithms or curated data, which can be influenced by governments or malicious actors to control what users see. This form of automated censorship is a growing concern, particularly with governments using AI to enforce or strengthen their systems of information control and silence dissent. While AI offers benefits, its application in content moderation raises significant issues regarding free expression, political discourse, and the intentional suppression of undesirable information.

How AI Facilitates Censorship
  • Curated Training Data:
AI models can be trained on data sets that intentionally exclude certain information, preventing them from providing that information when a user asks for it.

  • Algorithmic Manipulation:
AI models can be programmed to censor specific outputs, even if the training data suggests otherwise. This can be done by inserting code into the algorithms that instructs the AI not to produce certain types of content.

  • Automated Content Filtering:
AI systems can be used to automatically block or suppress content deemed undesirable, acting as a form of automated censorship that operates at scale.
Governmental Use of AI for Censorship
  • Strengthening Censorship Systems:
Authoritarian governments are leveraging AI to enhance and refine their online censorship efforts, ensuring AI-powered applications comply with their restrictive systems.

  • Mandating AI-Driven Moderation:
Some legal frameworks in countries mandate or encourage digital platforms to use machine learning to remove politically, socially, or religiously disfavored speech.

  • Informal Pressure on Platforms:
Governments may pressure social media platforms to moderate content, and concerns exist that AI tools could be used by platforms to suppress information, as seen in past incidents.
Examples and Concerns
Calls for Action
  • Critical AI Literacy:
There is a need for a critical perspective on AI, including a political dimension, to understand the nuances of AI censorship and its impacts.

  • Transparency and Accountability:
Greater transparency in data usage, content curation, and algorithm design is essential to protect independent media and civil society from AI-driven censorship.

  • Protecting Free Expression:
Advocacy groups are calling for policies that prevent government involvement in private algorithm and dataset decisions to safeguard First Amendment rights.

I noticed this message shows up after they recently removed an "AI Overview" for giving false information. Basically, they stop it from giving certain overviews to prevent it from giving false information.

False speech is rampant on this site as well, and it often comes straight from the posters themselves.

I have never seen it as a problem as I have simply ignored it.

Someone here will post it and I ignore and go on to the next or do a search myself.

How to avoid the Ai oversight b.s. censorship etc.

I just discovered this........................https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=Ai+overview+should+be+stopped&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

apparantly Ai is not allowing me to post how they can be avoided.
