Do Americans find metric too difficult?

Where I worked we sold worldwide and every thing was measured and weighed in metric. Now retired it seems I rarely have a need to use it.

No use for it. Occasionally I get material that comes in labeled that way but obviously I've already ordered at that point. I make my suppliers do the conversions.

I use both imperial and metric. Whatever I'm doing, if metric or imperial works better, I use that. When it comes to Quantity Surveying, I have to use metric because materials are sold in metric units.

Do you, or can you use metric?
I got my degrees in Engineering back when Jimmy Cater tried to force metric on us.

I am comfortable using both but I prefer Imperial. For measurements base 8 is more dividable than base 10. I like miles rather than kiolometers. Gallons more than Litres.

Besides, I am 'merican so I don't like soccer or metric. I am not a commie.

Around 1978, US domestic vehicles started using metric fasteners mixed with SAE. It was a PITA. Many mechanics had to buy metric tools. Myself, I didn't have to since I worked on Japanese motorcycles. To be honest, I prefer metric.

In machining, SAE/imperial is much better than metric.

Imperial gears are much easier to engineer and cut than Metric which has completely different formulas.
And that's just for involute gears...not cycloidal.

Same thing with thread cutting.

I can't do the conversions in my head...I don't even want to try either.

Can you make change?

If you give me some time ...

75% of Americans have never been abroad and naturally are stuck in their seasoned ways of thinking .

And the beauty of Imperial measurements are therefore largely lost on them and doubtless they would never master conversion .

The decimal system allows them to use their fingers, thumbs and toes when grappling with bigger calculations .

If you do any kind of mechanical work in the US, you can't escape metric. I have used both the inch and metric system for at least 40 years.

I use English for cooking, and weight, and for feet under ten feet. Over that I can use yards or meters. Driving is mph.
